Bomb planted along MLK Day Parade Route [Updated]

Please send your condolences to the real intended victims [h/t Balloon Juice]:

The Spokane office of the FBI confirmed late Tuesday morning that a suspicious package found along the route of the Unity Parade on Monday morning was a credible threat that had the potential to cause “multiple casualties.”

[…]

The backpack, a black Swiss Army pack, was found by a city employee [who deserves a medal -ed.] Monday morning at approximately 9:30 a.m. in a parking lot across from the INB Performing Arts Center. After it was reported, authorities shut down several blocks in the vicinity of the intersection of Main Avenue and Washington Street.

FBI special agent Frank Harrill said the investigation into the device has become a top priority, adding that the timing and placement of the device wasn’t coincidental.

As much as I’d like to think the usual rejects will take the opportunity to quietly sip their frothy tankards of StFu, I don’t hold out much hope.

I’m sure we’ll soon hear this is all the fault of the liberals and the lamestream media who want to DESTROY REALAMERICA and anyway the bomb couldn’t have done that much harm and the FBI made it up and holding parades in honor of someone who died trying to bring racial equality to America is racist and now Obama will use this as an excuse to take our guns and freedoms so let’s ramp up the paranoia to about … eleventy zillion.

Me, I just hope they catch the bastard before he tries something else. The FBI is offering $20 large for information.

[Update] This evening in Seattle police detonated a suspicious package in Counterbalance Park.

  1. You know what makes me want ot just give up? It’s that I thought things would begin to get better once Obama took office. And they have, at least materially. We have a way to go, but at least we’re cleaning up the mess rather than making it worse.

But the atmosphere in this country is about as ugly as I can ever recall, but I don’t really remember anything before Reagan. I told my wife a year ago that a congressman would get shot before this was all over. To be truthful, I’m amazed that it took as long as it did. And once it happened two weeks ago, I thought that at last some of the worst of the fireeaters would see where we were going as a country and back off a little bit. I even dared to hope it might spell the end of the teabag movement.

I can see now that I was in idiot for hoping that. They aren’t going to stop, any more than the fireeaters of the middle 1800’s pulled back after Preston Brooks nearly beat Charles Sumner to death on the floor iof the U.S. Senate. Glenn Beck himself could have shot Gabrielle Giffords, and they’d say that he’s been a secret liberal all along. I don’t know where we’ll end up, but I’m not liking where it looks like we’re headed.

Thanks for stopping by. To me it isn’t anywhere near as bad as I expected. I knew there would be a certain amount of losing of shit if Obama was elected. Hell, I’m still surprised he was elected. But we’re talking about a political group that still struggles to be fairly civil to minorities (and then only around election time). In addition, they’re still coming off their 8 year Bush High. They’re loud, but they’re loud because they know the “Good Old Days” are gone and aren’t coming back.

However, I was born at the end of the 60’s and raised by and around people who had been heavily involved in the Civil Rights Movement. Things aren’t perfect but this country compared to say 1965 is almost unrecognizable in that regard. I mean, there’s a black man in the Oval Office (and he isn’t there to dust the desk).

    Couldn’t be domestic terrorism…
    Nothing but a lone wolf…
    Nothing to see here…

How many lone wolves does it take to make a pack?

  3. Here’s what I think – and to establish my credentials, I was born during the Truman (!) Administration in the first half of the twentieth century, I saw with my own eyes colored motels and whites-only restaurants, and through no merit of my own I, a EuroAmerican, have mixed-race Latino nieces and nephews:

This is a dangerous situation. Racial hatred provides a substrate that nourishes the personal antagonism against Obama whipped up by widely-believed lies about his origins, religion, and “socialism.” Add in the climate of fear of the “war on terror”, being further inflamed even as we speak by perpetual war against Muslims, and the fact that Obama is actually working with the most regressive elements of the military-industrial-congressional-financial-corporate media complex (MICFiC)* to dismantle the New Deal, and that the further impoverishment of the great majority of Americans will necessarily continue and even accelerate (loss of manufacturing capacity, ever-more-expensive energy – and also food, most likely) –

    it doesn’t look good.

Of course, sometimes surprising things happen.

*MICFiC: a conspiracy to use, abuse and confuse the people; — metaphorically speaking, to milk, shear, and slaughter the sheeple (except the slaughter is not metaphorical).
